Posted: Post subject: Transphobia within the queer community - A study |
|
|
Heya fellow forum goers!
I'm currently at uni studying a Human Services degree and have decided the topic of one of my assessment pieces to be a research essay on transphobia within the queer community. Not just transphobia from the straight community but from other members of the GLBTI community. I decided on this topic because there is so much talk about the straight community oppressing GLBTI members and about how we as queer people need to fight that but what about in-house? I've had numerous friends (FTM, FTMs and Bi) have experiences of phobia/discrimination at at GLBTI events and others in the community simply because they are FTM, MTF or Bi. This angers me so I decided to do some research on the issue. It's not a very well-known/thought of issue and needs to be brought into focus.
Any thoughts/experiences would be great. All names etc will be private. I just need to get some different perspectives. Please don't stray off topic as I don't want to have to sift through a crazy amount of posts looking for info.
Thanks!

`It seemed as though I was "Robinson Crusoe" when I stated my disagreement with the view that "we transsexuals should exclude --- workers, transgenders & crossdressers so as to avoid 'constantly' being viewed as such" at a transsexual/transgender support group in Sydney last week.
Unfortunately the transsexual/transgendered community also discriminates against its own.

`Umm well yeah.. ignorance can be fixed, stupidity can not!
Sorry, I'm not much help to you. Also, I've never seen the "t" in glbt. I live my own life by my own rules and have never expected any help from anyone. TS women live their lives. We live and do as women do because that's what we are. If someone offends me, thats their insecurities, not mine. Ignorance, simpletons, idiots, enablers, whatever. As I see this, time and tide will wash old notions away as new generations come about. Well I don't let anyone push my buttons, they even offend us without even knowing it, Hahaha so funny! It doesn't bother me because I'm a very secure ts woman. Took a lot of hard work to become who I always thought of myself, way fun! Takes a ton of courage which most people dont posess. I speak for myself... being TS is not for wimps. Also, Ive never had the need to belong to a group, to feel part of something, to be "ok" with myself, f all that.
Kimphne, that is unfortunate.. TSs are the minority in this, so true.

`Very interesting topic. As a gay friend of mine once said, although much of the transgendered community identifies with and sort of gets lumped in to the gay community, the TG community is really not part of the gay community at all. Indeed, the classic transsexual (as opposed to the transvestite) does not see him/herself as gay. Food for thought.
